The story behind meccha

It is Kansai's contribution to national vocabulary, related to めちゃくちゃ and its cousin めちゃ, and it does the job of the textbook とても at three times the volume. There is no dignified way to write it in a business email, which Osaka would consider a feature.

Its spread is a story about television. As comedians from the west filled national broadcasting, their vocabulary travelled with them, and めっちゃ jumped from regional marker to something young people say everywhere. It arrived at a moment when Tokyo youth were leaning on 超 for the same job, and the map of who says which is still a quick way to place a speaker.
