The story behind metsu
Japanese has always liked reporting its own destruction. 死ぬ, 昇天, 語彙力がない, 無理 as a complete sentence: the pattern of saying an emotion finished you off is decades deep, and 滅 is the 2026 model. It arrives as 〜すぎて滅, and the single character does all the lifting.
What makes it satisfying is the weight of the kanji. 滅 belongs to serious vocabulary, the language of things being destroyed and dynasties ending, and here it is doing duty for a photograph of somebody's dog. That gap between the gravity of the character and the triviality of the cause is the entire joke, and it is delivered with a completely straight face.
