The story behind fujoshi
The joke is in the writing. 婦女子 is a stiff, old-fashioned word for women and girls, the sort that appears in official notices; swapping the first character for 腐, rotten, produces the same sound and a completely different confession. It surfaced on message boards in the early 2000s, invented by the women it describes.
That origin is the whole point. As a self-label it is affectionate and a little proud, a way of saying my imagination is spoiled and I like it there. Used about someone else it stops being a joke and becomes a classification, often applied to people who had no intention of announcing anything. Wait to be told, and if you are told, treat it as a confidence.
