What does genba mean?
In fan-speak, 現場 is anywhere your fave appears in the flesh: concerts, stage plays, handshake events. Outside fandom the same word means a construction site or a crime scene, so context does a lot of work.

The story behind genba
現場 is a working word. Construction crews, police officers and reporters all use it for the actual site, the place where the thing is really happening rather than being discussed. Fandom borrowed it intact, and borrowed the tone with it: fans talk about 現場に入る, entering the site, as though clocking on for a shift.
The joke is only half a joke. Tickets, lotteries, travel, queueing and standing for four hours genuinely resemble labour. The counterpart term proves the point — 在宅, at home, for fans who follow everything through screens. Since streaming became normal the two camps have stopped being ranked, but 現場 still carries the smell of a real building.
