My friend is so hardcore I can't follow their gear talk at all.
Vibe
Who you can say this to, and how it lands.
Friends only Casual. Natural with friends, out of place at work or with strangers.
The story behind gachizei
ガチ comes from ガチンコ, a word out of sumo for a bout fought for real, with nothing arranged in advance. That is the whole flavour: no pretending, no half measures. Add 勢, meaning a faction or force, and you get the serious contingent of any pursuit whatsoever.
The useful part is that it comes with an opposite. Every hobby, from gaming to fishing to karaoke, quietly divides into ガチ勢 and エンジョイ勢, the people who are here to win and the people who are here to have a nice time. Both labels are worn with pride, and the division prevents an enormous number of arguments before they start.
