The story behind baguru
Japanese makes verbs out of foreign nouns by bolting る on the end — サボる from sabotage, ググる from Google — and バグる arrived by the same door. Machines glitched first, and gamers kept it warm: in gaming culture a bug is content, something to hunt, name and film, so it never hardened into jargon.
Then it jumped to people. 頭がバグる is what four hours of sleep does to you. Time バグる during a long holiday. Best of all is the compliment — 顔がバグってる, a face so good it reads as a rendering error. That is the logic of the word: reality was supposed to have limits, and something has exceeded them.
