The story behind shoumonai
It grew out of しようもない, literally there is nothing to be done about it, and the resignation is still audible. Kansai kept it in daily rotation while standard Japanese leaned on つまらない, which is why the word arrives with a faint Osaka accent even in the mouths of people who have never lived there.
The interesting part is the warmth. In a region that treats comedy as a civic skill, calling a joke しょうもない is not a verdict, it is a reply.
