The story behind teka

Track it backwards and you get というか, a joint for correcting yourself mid-sentence, worn down through ってか to てか. That erosion is normal in Japanese; what happened next is the interesting part. A connector that belonged mid-sentence got promoted to the front of one.

Once it sits at the start it stops joining and starts steering. てか announces a swerve, either back over what you just said or straight into a new topic, without any of the apparatus a polite topic change would require. The longer form was mocked as sloppy youth speech decades ago. The short one is now simply how conversation turns.
