The story behind owakon
オワコン is 終わったコンテンツ compressed into four beats. Note that コンテンツ is doing very Japanese work here: in business language it covers games, anime, apps, television formats and even people, so anything can in principle be declared finished. The word grew out of message board culture around the turn of the 2010s and moved onto Twitter as a general-purpose verdict.
It is a weapon, and everybody knows it. Fandoms use it against rival fandoms, ex-fans use it on the way out, and companies dread the day it attaches to their product. The joke is that it is frequently wrong. Plenty of things declared オワコン came back, and the people who buried them are now in the queue.
