Behind this word sits nukui, an older and still regional way of saying warm, the root that also gives Japanese nukumori, the warmth left behind by a body. Nukunuku is that warmth with a wall around it: under the quilt while the room is freezing, inside a kotatsu, in a coat that wins the argument with the wind.
