The story behind pien
Pien is not a word so much as a sound effect wearing a word's clothes. It imitates a small sniffle, the tremble just before crying, and it is almost always used for damage that is objectively minor and emotionally enormous.
It took over around 2019 among high school students, arriving alongside the pleading face emoji and topping the slang rankings that year. Then came escalation, as always: when pien is not big enough, the sadness becomes paon, a sound closer to an elephant, and the phrase for going beyond one to the other became a catchphrase. Two hundred yen short at the register is pien. Missing the last train is paon.
