The story behind nuikatsu

The 活 on the end is the same 活 as in 就活 for job hunting and 婚活 for marriage hunting: Japanese turns any pursuit into an official-sounding campaign. ぬい活 applies that grammar to a stuffed animal. You take the plush out, seat it by the window, and photograph it in better light than you have ever given yourself.

It grew alongside 推し活 in the 2010s, when fandom merchandise began including palm-sized plushies and the doll became a stand-in for the character you cannot travel with. Shops now sell outfits, tiny bags and carrying pouches with clear windows. The related verb is ぬい撮り, and yes, the plush has the better feed.
