The story behind kaiwai
Kaiwai used to be a word for a physical neighbourhood, the area around a station or a riverside district, the kind of thing printed on tourist signage. It carried a pleasant vagueness: not a boundary, just a rough sense of around here and the shops that make it feel like somewhere.
The internet took that vagueness and found it perfect. A community online has no borders either, only a gravity, and everyone inside recognises the regulars. So now every hobby has its kaiwai, complete with local customs, in-jokes and periodic feuds. The word carries a faint smile, because saying a scene exists is also gently admitting it has drama.
