Culture note
Originally a solemn word for sacred things. Fandom borrowed it, so it is basically worship — aimed at your favorites.
The story behind toutoi
Before fandom got hold of it, toutoi was a solemn word. It belonged to temples and textbooks, reserved for sacred things, noble sacrifices and the kind of life you are supposed to speak about carefully. Nobody used it about a cartoon character eating a sandwich.
That changed across the 2010s, as anime and idol fandom on Twitter needed a word for reverence rather than opinion. Toutoi says nothing about quality; it says you have stopped analysing and started worshipping. The tone is genuinely devotional and completely unserious at the same time, and that double register is why it stuck. It has since spawned an entire family of mutations.
