The story behind ryo
The chain is easy to follow. 了解 is understood, a normal reply. Typing it out felt slow, so it became りょ. And because young messaging culture never stops compressing, there is a further stage, り, a single character carrying an entire acknowledgement. Anything shorter would be punctuation.
The catch is register. 了解 itself is already considered a little casual for a superior, which is why office manuals push 承知しました instead, and りょ is nowhere near the building. Among friends it is warm and efficient. Sent upward it reads as though you could not spare the second syllable, which, technically, is exactly what happened.
