The verb underneath means to push, and it was fan vocabulary first: your oshi is the one you push, the member you recommend to friends, the character whose merit you argue for in the group chat. The word grew up around the large idol groups of the late 2000s, where having a favourite among dozens was structurally necessary.
From there it went everywhere. People now have an oshi in a football squad, a stage cast, a museum collection, a zoo. The activity around it has its own name, its own budgets and its own shelves. Few single syllables have moved this much money or this much affection.
