The story behind neochi
寝落ち makes sense once you know that 落ちる, to drop, meant leaving a server long before it meant falling asleep. In the chat rooms and online games of the late 1990s, 落ちます was how you announced your exit. 寝落ち was therefore not sleep as such, but sleep as an unplanned logout.
That history explains why the word still implies witnesses. Nobody says 寝落ち about a nap alone in a quiet room. It happens on a call, in a party of four, three episodes into a recommended series. Among younger users 寝落ち通話, staying connected while you both drift off, is its own gentle ritual: quiet breathing, a screen still glowing at four in the morning.
