The story behind honne

Written with the characters for true and sound, honne is the note humming underneath the polite chord. It is not a secret and not a confession, just the position you actually hold, kept offstage until the setting lets it out.

Japanese social life builds specific rooms for that release. The second bar of the night, the smoking corner, the long train ride home from a company trip, the friend you never had to perform for. Alcohol gets treated as an official permit, which is why somebody coined nomunication, drinking plus communication, for the era when careers were half negotiated after ten in the evening. Younger workers are markedly less charmed by that arrangement, and honne is increasingly expected to fit inside office hours.
