The story behind gachi
Gachi is short for gachinko, and gachinko comes from the sumo world, where it described a bout fought for real rather than arranged in advance. The word itself is said to imitate the sound of two enormous bodies colliding, which tells you everything about the register it started in.
Television carried it out of the stables and into ordinary speech around the turn of the millennium, and once it was loose it shrank. Gachi now bolts onto anything: a gachi fan, a gachi apology, gachi hungry. The irony is that it is used most often by people exaggerating, which is exactly what it promises not to be doing.
