The story behind dotakyan
The 土壇場 in ドタキャン is not a metaphor anyone invented recently. It was the earthen mound of an Edo-period execution ground, the last place you would ever stand, which is how the phrase came to mean the final possible moment. Bolt a clipped English cancel onto that and you get a word with a grimmer origin than its everyday use suggests.
It is often traced to late-twentieth-century entertainment jargon, where schedules collapse for a living, and it is now plain enough for a news bulletin. Note its rarely mentioned twin, ドタ参, arriving at the last minute after saying you could not come. One of these gets forgiven quickly. It is not the first one.
