あざとい azatoi
Cute on purpose — and it works anyway.
What does azatoi mean?
Charm you can see the calculation behind. Once a flat criticism, now half a compliment: the trick is obvious, everybody knows, and the room falls for it regardless.
Example
あの上目遣い、あざといけど効く。
That upward glance is calculated, but it lands every time.
Vibe
Who you can say this to, and how it lands.
Friends only Casual. Natural with friends, out of place at work or with strangers.
The story behind azatoi
The old meaning had nothing to do with cuteness. あざとい described someone shrewd in a grasping way, the sort of merchant who squeezed a little too hard, and it was purely negative. Somewhere along the way the shrewdness narrowed to a specific arena: performing adorable on purpose, and being caught at it.
The 2010s finished the job by welding it to かわいい. あざとかわいい treats the calculation as part of the appeal, the way a magic trick is more fun when you can almost see the hand. Television variety turned it into a compliment you can hand to a friend across a table. Said coldly about a stranger it still bites, so keep the smile in your voice.
