The story behind arashi
荒らす means to lay waste, the verb you would use for a storm going through a field, and 荒らし names the person doing it to a thread. It comes from the bulletin board era, when a single determined poster could flatten a whole community overnight and no moderator was awake.
Out of that era came the standard advice, still repeated today: 荒らしはスルー, ignore them, plus the sharper corollary that anyone who responds to a 荒らし has become one. Japanese communities really do practise this, which is why a comment section can go strangely silent around an obvious provocation. Silence here is not indifference. It is a technique, and it mostly works.
