The story behind eapu
エアプ shortens エアプレイヤー, and the エア is the same one as in エアギター: you are performing the motions with nothing in your hands. It settled into gaming communities during the 2010s and now applies to anyone reviewing a work they have only met through clips, summaries or other people's opinions.
Streaming culture made the accusation both easier and harder. You can watch fifty hours of someone else playing and speak fluently about a game you never installed, which is precisely the problem, but you can also learn a great deal that way. The result is a defensive habit worth noticing: Japanese posters often declare their own status up front, admitting エアプですが before saying anything at all.
