yappari

I knew it. Or: actually, changed my mind.

What does yappari mean?

Two jobs in four syllables. It confirms a hunch you already had, and it announces that you're switching back to your first instinct — usually at the restaurant counter, mid-order.

Example

I've decided to walk there after all.

The story behind yappari

Yappari is the casual grandchild of yahari, the stiffer form you still hear in speeches and news commentary. Squeeze it further and you get yappa, which is what people actually say to friends. All three do the same two things: confirm what you suspected, and reverse a decision without apology.

That second use is where foreigners meet it most. Someone orders, pauses, then says yappari and orders something else entirely — no explanation required. It's less indecision than a socially licensed undo button, and Japanese lets you press it right up to the last second.
