The story behind wanchan
Wanchan is one chance, clipped. The word is usually traced to games where a single remaining opening decides everything, mahjong tables and competitive play especially, before student slang picked it up and made it much less rigorous.
That loosening is the fun part. In its strict sense it means the odds are poor but real, so it is worth trying. In student mouths it became the polite face of wishful thinking: wanchan the train is late, wanchan he likes me, wanchan we finish before dawn. It helps that the sound is identical to a childish word for a dog, which the internet has never once let pass without a joke.
