The story behind niji sousaku
The word is administrative in tone and enormous in practice. Japanese fandom has produced self-published derivative comics since the 1970s, and the twice-yearly self-published comics fair in Tokyo, running since the mid-1970s, turned that habit into infrastructure: printers, distribution, deadlines, a whole shadow industry with its own etiquette.
That etiquette matters, because the legal position is famously informal. Most rights holders tolerate fan work as long as it stays small, credits nothing to the original as official, and does not compete with the source. So the community polices itself hard: tag your pairings, warn for content, never send your work to the creator. Foreign fans get into trouble mostly by ignoring that last rule.
